Ghana's lively coastal capital, full of history, markets and music.
Accra is a busy, friendly city on the Gulf of Guinea. Black Star Square and the Independence Arch mark Ghana's independence in 1957, the first in sub Saharan Africa, and the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park honours its first president.
Jamestown, the old fishing quarter, has a lighthouse and colourful boats, and Makola Market is the place for fabric and food. Labadi Beach is popular at weekends.
Cape Coast and Elmina castles, UNESCO World Heritage sites linked to the Atlantic slave trade, are about three hours west. The drier months are November to March.
