Jeddah has welcomed pilgrims for centuries and is the main arrival point for Umrah travellers heading to Makkah. King Abdulaziz International Airport handles most flights, and the Haramain high speed railway links Jeddah with Makkah and Madinah.

The old town, Al Balad, is a UNESCO World Heritage site of coral stone houses with carved wooden balconies. Along the sea, the corniche runs for miles past parks, sculptures and King Fahd's Fountain, which shoots water high over the Red Sea.

The Red Sea reefs off Jeddah are popular for diving and snorkelling. November to February brings the most comfortable temperatures.

The gateway to Umrah

Most Umrah flights from the UK land at Jeddah's King Abdulaziz International Airport, which has its own Haramain railway station for Makkah and Madinah.

  • Al Balad: the old town of coral stone houses and carved wooden balconies, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • The Corniche: the Red Sea promenade, with King Fahd's Fountain and the mosque that seems to float on the water at high tide.
  • A night here: before or after Umrah, to rest from the flight or for a last day by the sea.

From Jeddah to Makkah and Madinah

Makkah is about an hour away by road, or a short ride on the Haramain railway; Madinah is about two hours further by train.
