A whitewashed harbour town with a crusader castle, marinas and boat trips.
Bodrum stands on the site of ancient Halicarnassus, home of the Mausoleum, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Little of the tomb remains, but its stones helped build Bodrum Castle, raised by the Knights of St John, which now holds a Museum of Underwater Archaeology.
Whitewashed houses climb the hills around two bays, and the waterfront is lined with restaurants and traditional wooden gulets offering day cruises.
Around the peninsula, Gümbet and Bitez are busy beach resorts, Yalıkavak has a smart marina, and Gümüşlük is known for its fish restaurants.
