The old Inca capital high in the Andes, gateway to the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu.
Cusco was the capital of the Inca Empire, and Spanish colonial churches stand on Inca stone walls throughout the old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Plaza de Armas is the heart of the city.
Most visitors come to see Machu Picchu, reached by train through the Sacred Valley. Cusco sits at about 3,400 metres, so allow a day or two to adjust to the altitude. Flights from the UK connect through Lima.
