Nice sits on the Baie des Anges, with the Promenade des Anglais running for several kilometres along the seafront. Behind it, the old town, Vieux Nice, is a tangle of narrow lanes around the Cours Saleya flower and food market.
Climb Castle Hill for views over the bay and the port, and visit the Matisse and Chagall museums in the Cimiez district. The beaches are pebbly, with both public stretches and private beach clubs.
Trains and buses along the coast make easy day trips to Monaco, Cannes, Antibes and the hilltop village of Èze.
