A medieval walled old town on the Baltic, compact and easy to explore.
Tallinn's old town is a remarkably complete medieval trading city, with cobbled lanes, merchants' houses and a ring of towers and walls. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and small enough to explore on foot in a day.
Climb Toompea hill for viewpoints over the red roofs and the sea, then head down to Town Hall Square, home to a Christmas market each December. East of the centre, Kadriorg Palace was built for Peter the Great.
The old factories of Telliskivi Creative City are now full of cafés and shops, and ferries cross to Helsinki in around two hours.
